Forget treadmills & ab-crunchers, "Get Fit at Get Bent".  Belly Dancing is excellent exercise and it was designed specifically for women.  This ancient healing art was passed down from mother to daughter to develop strong pelvic muscles for easing childbirth.  Fortunately, you don't need to plan to have a baby to enjoy its benefits.  Belly dance will build you to the core.  Try a Beginner Belly Dance Workout class for a fun and upbeat workout.

SELF-ACCEPTANCE

This ancient art accentuates the natural beauty of every woman.  From kids to seniors, belly dancing is suitable for all ages and sizes - some men even belly dance.  At Get Bent, we have women who are still "shaking it" at 75 years old.  If you are shy about your belly, that will soon pass.  Belly dance movements look better on women with hips.  Get Bent provides a safe environment to teach women - young & old - to appreciate and accept their bodies.

Belly dancing is a wonderful social activity that offers women (& those few brave men) a community of like-minded friends.  People who feel shy and awkward often come to life through the comfort and encouragement they receive through dance.

As one of the world's oldest dances, Belly Dancing is rich with exotic culture from the Middle East and India.  There are many misconceptions and stereotypes about belly dancing (please learn more here).  Thus, learning to belly dance gives people a wider appreciation for the music, clothing and traditions of many other cultures.

Belly dancing is an excellent activity for youth to build coordination, self-esteem, fitness, positive role models and friends.  Classes focus on techniques, rhythms, costuming & choreography suitable for each age level.  Belly Camps also run throughout the year.

Beginner Belly Dance Workout

Get Fit at Get Bent!  Get a great workout while dancing to upbeat music. Get Bent's Beginner Belly Dance Workout classes give you a solid foundation of moves & steps for the studio's three belly dance styles.

Isolated torso exercises develop your stomach, arms & upper back muscles.  Hip techniques give your legs, glutes & calves an excellent workout.  Wear comfortable clothing and bare feet -- and prepare to sweat!  Best of all, these classes help you to learn to love your body - especially the parts you think you hate.

Beware, these classes lead to costume addictions.

Bollywood Belly Dancing

Our trademark belly dance style - Get Bent's Bollywood Belly Dancing blends East Indian & Arabic pop music with hip-hop dance remixes. Costumes are bright & accented with beautiful Indian jewelry.  This style is uplifting, fast and high-energy.  Along with being a great time, it's a great workout.  If you want to learn a style for a fun night out dancing, this is a great choice.

Egyptian Cabaret Belly Dancing

Egyptian Cabaret is a classical feminine belly dance style. Beginner classes provide the base to start combination movements.  Veils and zills are often used to enhance movements and rhythms. This beautiful style is done to traditional Middle Eastern music, and encourages grace & sensuality.

Tribal Fusion Belly Dancing

Dark, mysterious & snakey - Tribal Fusion mesmerizes.  Done to drum-and-bass industrial music, Tribal Fusion has a deep urban vibe.  Tribal utilizes tight, isolated movements and develops great control of one's body & mind. This is an intense commanding style that completely envelopes its viewers.  The music and costumes are just too cool.

Get Bent Junior Performance Program

These two classes are a year round commitment.  Open to experienced dancers that love or want to perform. If your sights are set to audition for the  Performance Troupe this is an excellent start.  Ages are 9-12yrs and 13+ respectively.  Bollywood and Egyptian are taught with great attention to rhythms, zills and layering.   Performances are throughout the Okanagan with a few optional trips to Vancouver. These two classes are also a highlight at the Performance Belly Banquet each August.

Get Bent Entrance Performers:

The newbie's!  Don't worry, it doesn't take long to kick that scary feeling of joining a big group.  The Entrance Program is for those who are starting to perform, and/or want greater experience in the studio's three belly dance styles. Group performances are done locally throughout the Okanagan with the option of a few Vancouver trips. 6 Member Troupe

 

Get Bent Local Troupe:

For those who can make a restricted commitment to performing, practicing & traveling (because you know...you have a life - kids, serious job etc.)

All performances are within the Okanagan. Extra rehearsal time is kept to a minimum.  Volunteer shows throughout the year are expected, and occasionally there are opportunities for compensated group and solo performances.  Dancers must be well-rounded in all three Get Bent belly dance styles and are encouraged to develop a specialty.

8 Member Troupe

 

Get Bent Tour Troupe:

Dancing & performing are your life! - or least you would like to make it that way.  This dance troupe is highly commitment.  Dancers can miss no more than 12 rehearsals per year.  Each year, this troupe goes on a ten day tour during the last week of Spring break, and tours numerous weekends throughout the year.

Performing solos in each Get Bent dance style is required.  The tour group performs both traditional & modern bellydance styles while blending other styles into performances.  Although not required, a background in other dance styles such as jazz, hip-hop, ballet and/or Latin dances is helpful.  Performers must display diversity & adaptability, and strive to have strong stage-presence.  Tour Troupe dancers should be striving beyond technique to utilize this beautiful art as a form of expression.  Further, a high-level of professionalism and camaraderie is expected.  All dancers must also have up-to-date passports.

8 Member Troupe

Notes:  Although Performance Classes are scheduled separately, Tour Troupe dancers must attend all Entrance & Local Troupe classes.  Local Troupe dancers are encouraged to also take Entrance Classes.
